Development Solutions
Quick Links:
Our research has shown that most managers don’t just want to be ‘OK’ – they want to be GREAT …
… but are often unsure how and where to start.
We also discovered the common actions great managers took to control and accelerate their development …
… and created the 5Ws approach to development:
The 5Ws Approach To Development:

Great managers undertake detailed reviews, including costings, of both the benefits of developing and the consequences of stagnation.
This step is often eye-opening and kickstarts a development journey.
It takes you beyond “I have to come up with a development plan” and makes it really personal!

Great managers don’t fall for the over simplistic ideas. They understand that management and leadership is complex.
They focus on understanding what good and great look like, then identify which area to develop next.
The Quaternion Profile defines the range of knowledge and skills needed.

Great managers apply a process when creating and maintaining their self-development plan.
Usually this process has three common components: Reflect, Plan and Act.
However, great managers are not misled by simplicity. They bring rigour to their thinking for each of those three components.

Great managers understand that intent alone does not lead to robust action.
They know reminders to get started, frequent checks on progress, feedback and support, and short-term rewards keep things on track until longer-term payback is achieved.
So, they set all those things up.

Great managers take the development process more seriously than most.
They only plan what they WILL commit to – no more, no less.
They also ensure that they have set realistic start, review and target end-points, so that they will not be steered off track by an event, demand or distraction.
The method of development is only one half of the equation.
The other half is content.
That’s where our Quaternion Profile comes in.
It provides the structure, knowledge and skills needed to achieve Management Mastery.
There’s more information about the Quaternion Profile below.
We’ve invested decades researching two critically important issues:
How can we equip, enable and inspire individual managers to:
a) maximise their own and their team’s performance, given their existing level of capability?
b) focus and accelerate their own and their team’s development – to unleash their true potential and increase their capability?
We Discovered The Eight Key Characteristics of Master Managers:

Targeted
They understood the need to specifically target managerial competencies for development, instead of assuming a general development approach would be enough

Focused
They realised early in their career how important personal development would be to make progress – they did it because they knew it mattered, not because they’d been told to

Systematic
They worked out what they needed to do to first become good and then great managers, through refining and combining learnings, practices, capabilities and competencies

Planned
They created and found ways to maintain an effective development plan, that enabled them to go further than the common (and arguably limited) model of Reflect, Plan, Act

Opportunistic
They capitalised on development opportunities that arose, without depending on them for progress.

Creative
They found ways to use their every-day meaningful work to identify, isolate and exploit opportunities to develop.

Collaborative
They actively identified people who could help and tools that could effectively assist them on their learning pathway.

Resilient
They persevered in the face of the struggles and challenges everyone faces in pursuit of their personal development.
We know we cannot manage WHAT we produce, only HOW we produce it (our behaviours).
But WHICH behaviours should we concentrate on for enhanced performance and accelerated development?
Many models (and there are many!) attempt to simplify the behaviours required.
But this risks either ommission of important competencies and behaviours … or highly complex explanations of a small number of ‘super behaviours’.
The Answer Is The Quaternion Profile:
We believe in specificity and clarity in our definitions, rather than unnecessary, forced acronyms and tag-line descriptions.
We believe you are capable of understanding every nuance of your personal development, so you can use your strengths to their full advantage and create actions around developing those areas which inhibit your growth.
Each of the 4 Dimensions of the Quaternion Profile is uncompromising in its adherence to these beliefs.
Each Dimension contains 13 Elements.
These 13 Elements each contain 4 Sub-Elements.
That’s 52 individual competencies and 208 anchor behaviours.
And those create Management Mastery.
